History

Kratom has been known for thousands of years, it was officially documented for the first time in the early 19th century. This happened in Thailand by Dutch botanist Pieter Korthals. Pieter Korthals gave the scientific name: "Mitragyna Speciosa" to Kratom when he documented it.

Kratom Tree

The Kratom tree is also known as "Thom" or "Ketum". Kratom is derived from a Thai word for a species of tree known as Mitragyna Speciosa. It is a large tree in the Rubiaceae family. The tropical evergreen tree has its roots in the coffee family and is native to Southeast Asia. Kratom trees can grow higher than 18 meters and wider than 4.5 meters. It has light to dark green colored oval-shaped leaves and round yellow flowers, each containing about 50 seeds. The Kratom tree grows in wet or marshy areas.

Kratom grows in areas like:

- Thailand
- Indonesia
- Malaysia
- Sumatra
- Java
- Bali
- Borneo
- The Sunda Islands
- Papua New Guinea

These areas have different climates. Kratom adapts strongly to its surroundings. Because of this, there are various Kratom trees with different properties to be found. Using different harvest times, different drying / curing methods, and sometimes blending multiple colors of Kratom, various strains of Kratom are created, each with their own unique properties.
