Kratom is the dried leaf material of the Mitragyna speciosa plant, which was named by E. M. Holmes in 1895. Holmes then called Kratom an Opium substitute. Kratom is a member of the coffee family. Little is known about the origin of Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa), as it is spread in Southeast Asia.

These areas have different climates. The kratom adapts strongly to its surroundings. As a result, there have been several Kratom species with its own effects and powers.

In these cultures the leaves are chewed to relieve muscles and decrease appetite and increase energy and libido.
Kratom has been used for thousands of years, it was officially documented for the first time in the early 19th century. This happened in Thailand by Dutch botanist Pieter Korthals. Pieter Korthals gave the scientific name: "Mitragyna speciosa" to Kratom when he documented it.
Kratom is legal almost everywhere in the world, including almost all 50 states in the United States and many countries in Europe. Kratom is not legal in Malaysia, Thailand, Lithuania, Australia, Finland, Denmark, Grenada, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Latvia, Norway, Myanmar, Bhutan and Sweden. The Kratom tree is also known as "Thom" or "Ketum". Kratom is derived from a Thai word for a species of tree known as Mitragyna speciosa. It is a large tree in the Rubiaceae family. The tropical evergreen tree has it’s roots in the coffee family and is native to Southeast Asia. Kratom trees can grow higher than 18 meter and wider than 4.5 meter. It has light to darkgreen oval shaped leaves with round yellow flowers which contain about 50 seeds. The Kratom tree grows in wet or marshy areas.
